USC DANCE FACILITY (opening Spring 2009)
LATEST NEWS!
Our new planned Dance Facility has received a strong show of support in the form of a major donation.
Katherine Matthews, CEO and owner of Columbia-based Modern Exterminating and a longtime supporter of arts in the city, became the first “named” sponsor of the new building in Fall 2007.
The donation makes possible a new studio space for the department which will be officially named The Katherine E. and George G. Matthews Dance Studio.
Construction on the building began in February, 2008. The building is scheduled to open for use in the Spring of 2009. The site is located on Sumter Street, between Wheat St. and Whaley St.
The new facility offers a host of much-needed improvements which will benefit the Dance program. In addition to the Matthews studio space, there are two other studios planned. Dividers will further increase the function of the spaces. Dedicated sit-down classroom space has also been designated, in addition to men’s/women’s locker rooms/showers.
The new building promises great amenities for the faculty and staff, as well, with individual offices erasing the current situation which has all faculty/staff housed in one room. Faculty-only restrooms are an added bonus.
Other improvements to look forward to include a dance department lobby with a “commons” area and a football-field sized space which will be shared with the USC Marching Band. Equipped with a lighting-grid, this space provides an area for recitals or other performances by the department.

You can be a part of the new space!
A brick donation drive is still on-going to continue to raise funds for the project, whose cost is expected to be near $7 million. For a $100 donation, a donor may specify up to 3 lines of text on a brick which will be laid on the grounds of the new building. Donating a brick is a wonderful way to honor family, friends or alums while benefitting our fast-growing Dance program.
