Arts and Sciences Alumni Council

The purpose of the Alumni Council of the University of South Carolina College of Arts and Sciences is to serve as an advisory group to the dean of the college, increase alumni interaction with the college, provide continuing education and professional networking opportunities between alumni and students, and to support the college in its mission to transform the lives of its students and improve the world they will inhabit.

Laura BauldLaura Bauld
Laura Bauld graduated from Carolina cum laude with a B.A. in International Studies and Spanish Language. Upon graduation, she became employed as a Legislative Assistant in the Office of United States Senator Lindsey Graham in Washington, D.C., where she specialized in education, labor, welfare, and agriculture policy for seven years. Laura currently serves as the Senator's Upstate Director in Greenville, where she manages his Greenville Office and oversees community outreach and constituent service activities in the Upstate region.

Jerry BaxterGerald L. "Jerry" Baxter
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Jerry graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina in 1981 with a B.A. in history, and has since spent 26 years in consumer products sales. Twenty-four of those years have been in the alcoholic beverage industry. In 1996, Jerry joined Ben Arnold Beverage Company and held positions that include Vice President of Sales- Wine Division, Corporate Director of Training and Development, and Vice President of Sales-Diageo Division. Currently, he is Vice President of National Accounts for The Charmer Sunbelt Group.

Marty BelkMarty Presler Belk
Marty Belk earned her B.S. in biology in 1969. Many doors opened for her as a chemist for Celanese Corp. for 2 years, after which she moved on to medical research for 5 years at Vanderbilt Hospital. Eventually, her ongoing interest in real estate became a priority and her career. She moved back to her hometown, Rock Hill, SC, where she met her husband, Don Belk, who was a realtor. Marty has continued her real estate career in Charleston and is involved in numerous community endeavors, including serving on the school board for East Cooper.

Jason BoxtJason Boxt
Jason Boxt received his B.A. in international studies at USC in 1994. He is Vice President at The Glover Park Group, where he provides public opinion research, message development and issue advocacy expertise to GPG. Prior to joining GPG, Jason was the Director of National Advocacy at the Center for U.S. Global Engagement, and before that was the National Deputy Political Director at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). He started his public opinion research career at Global Strategy Group.

W.H. Jack BreazealeW.H. Jack Breazeale
Jack Breazeale received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1966. He taught at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC from 1965-1970. In 1970 he was a founding faculty member of a new state college in Florence, SC: now Francis Marion University. From 1970 until his retirement in 1997, he was chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics and Professor of Chemistry. Jack has been active in the American Chemical Society for over 40 years and he has held numerous offices in the ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety.

Vasa CateVasa Cate
Vasa Cate received his B.S. in biology from USC in 1964, and M.D. from MUSC in 1970. He did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine and received training in gastroenterology all at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1970-1974. He went on to establish the Consultants in Internal Medicine (later Consultants in Gastroenterology) in 1977 next to the Lexington Medical Center. Vasa also served as Chief of Medicine while on the staff at Lexington Medical Center. He remained with Consultants in Gastroenterology until his retirement in 2004.

Marjorie ClaytorMarjorie Claytor
Marjorie Claytor completed her degrees in Mathematics and Biology at Carolina in 1950. Since then she has served as a math consultant in the Office of Curriculum and Standards at the South Carolina state Department of Education. She is also the chairperson for the Missions/Outreach Ministry of the Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church, which is responsible for empowering the congregation in ministries of personal, social healing, and reconciliation in the communities in which Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church bears witness.

Thorne ComptonThorne Compton
Thorne joined the USC Department of English as a faculty member soon after receiving his Ph.D. in English literature from that department in the 1970s. During his time with Carolina Thorne served in a number of administrative capacities. In 2004 he served as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and a year later became Senior Associate Dean in the new College of Arts and Sciences, a position he held until 2007 when he returned to the English Department to be a full-time member of its teaching faculty.

Dan D'AlbertoDaniel D'Alberto
Mr. Daniel R. D'Alberto earned his B.A. in political science from the University of South Carolina Honors College in 1997, and an M.S. in higher education administration from Florida State University in 2000. In 2005, he earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is an associate of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP with a wide variety of experience advising businesses in the areas of complex business, patent, pharmaceutical, and securities litigation.

Devaris DavisDevaris Davis
Upon earning his B.S. and M.S. degrees in statistics in 1992 and 1999, respectively, Devaris Davis took on a variety of employment opportunities with the adhesive coating and printing industries. His primary areas of expertise have been data analysis, problem solving, and process improvement. He currently works as Quality Manager for Avery Dennison in Clinton, South Carolina. A Life Member of the Carolina Alumni Association, he has also served on the Alumni Association's Board of Governors, and he is a former president of the Black Alumni Council.

Eric DellEric Dell
Eric earned his B.A. in political science from USC in 1994 and his J.D. at the USC School of Law in 1997. During his time at USC, he was involved in Student Government, various university committees and organizations, serving as a Student Senator and Student Body Treasurer. After graduation from law school, Eric served as a judicial law clerk to the late Marc Westbrook. He has been active in politics for many years and served as Chief of Staff to then State Senator Joe Wilson. He currently serves as Chief of Staff and Counsel to Congressman Joe Wilson.

Steven DillinghamSteven Dillingham
Steven Dillingham directs the Transportation Safety Institute for the U.S. Department of Transportation, located in Oklahoma City. He received his M.P.A., Ph.D. and J.D. from the University of South Carolina. He has held senior positions in more than a dozen Federal offices and agencies, including the departments of Transportation, Justice and Energy. He has served at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq and he was on the faculty at Carolina. In addition to working for Congress, Steven has also worked with both private companies and non-profits.

Mark DuttonMark Dutton
Mark Dutton completed his B.S. degree (1977) in biology education and M.S. degree (1981) in biological sciences at USC. He served as State Parks Naturalist for the SC State Park Service for several years before beginning work for the Department of the Army as a biologist. He has managed natural and cultural resources for the United States Army Training Center and Fort Jackson since 1991. Mark founded a hiking club for families in 1995 called Families Understanding Nature and has been active with SC Habitat for Humanity for many years.

Jotaka EaddyJotaka L. Eaddy
Jotaka Eaddy is a 2001 graduate of Carolina with a dual degree in political science and criminal justice. While at Carolina she served as Student Body President of USC, becoming the first African-American woman to serve in that position in the University's 200 year history. She formerly served as the domestic program coordinator at the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, where she coordinated the office's Grassroots, Education, and Mobilization project. She has been involved with the anti-death penalty movement for over nine years.

Samuel FinkleaSamuel Finklea
Samuel L. Finklea, III, received his M.S. and Ph.D. (1975) in physics and J.D. (1984) from USC. He practiced environmental law in the Office of the General Counsel, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control. In 2005 he joined DHEC's Office of Public Health Preparedness and is detailed to the SC Information and Intelligence Center, South Carolina's homeland security fusion center. He is active in the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, the National Guard Association of South Carolina, and the SC Chapter of the Air Force Association.

Cheryl FisherCheryl Fisher
Cheryl Fisher received a Master of Mathematics from Carolina in 1974 and a Juris Doctor from the USC School of Law in 1990. She is an attorney with Rogers Townsend & Thomas, where she concentrates her practice on default and contested foreclosures, resolution of title issues, mobile home issues, loss mitigation issues, and Chapter 7, 11 and 13 bankruptcy issues. Her previous experience was as a large systems marketing representative in the manufacturing and distribution sector for IBM.

Ryan HoltRyan Holt
Ryan Holt is an attorney at the law firm of Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow, P.A. in Columbia. In 2006, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in political science. He received his law degree from the USC School of Law in 2009. As a student, Ryan was twice elected Vice President of the Student Body and was a columnist for the student newspaper. When not practicing law, Ryan enjoys Gamecock football, relaxing on Lake Murray, discussing politics with friends, and touring the State with his wife.

Joel JohnsonJoel Johnson
A graduate of Spring Valley High School in Columbia, Joel Johnson completed his B.S. in biology from Carolina in 1978 and then went on to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He has been practicing dentistry in Columbia for the past 27 years. He is on the Board of Trustees for Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital and just recently rotated off the Children's Hospital Board for Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. For the past 17 years he has also served as the Team Dentist for The University of South Carolina Athletic teams.

Richard LitwinRichard Litwin
Richard Litwin received a B.A. in economics from USC in 1984 and a J.D. from Emory University in 1987. He has over 20 years of experience practicing law in the state of Georgia. Richard started his legal career at the State of Georgia Attorney General's office and subsequently went into private practice in Atlanta. He now owns The Litwin Law Firm, P.C. of Atlanta where he specializes in Local and State Tax disputes. He has earned many accolades including being named one of Georgia's Super Lawyers in the area of Tax Law for the past four years in a row.

John LogueJohn Logue
John Logue received his B.S. in Biology in 1964 and M.S. in 1966 from the University of South Carolina. After further studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he taught at USC Sumter until his retirement in 2007. He served as Chair of the Division of Science, Mathematics and Engineering from 1994 - 2002. At retirement he held the rank of full professor and was appointed Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences.

Jared MobleyJared D. Mobley
Jared Mobley completed his B.S. in Mathematics at Carolina in 1995 and his J.D. at the USC School of Law in 1998. He is a lawyer with K&L Gates LLP in the Charlotte office and focuses his practice on complex aspects of federal, state and local taxation, including creating and implementing tax-efficient structures for the firm's clients. His practice covers many facets of tax law that are intertwined with the business activities of the firm's clients, including: advising clients on the tax aspects of private equity, venture capital and M&A transactions.

Torod NeptuneTorod Neptune
Torod Neptune received his B.A. in International Studies from USC. He is Corporate Vice President Communications for Verizon Communications Inc. In this role, he is responsible for leading communications strategy planning and execution for Verizon's consumer, small business, global enterprise, government, and wholesale businesses worldwide, including overseeing public relations, media and industry analyst relations, corporate messaging, social media and digital strategy, and domestic and international agency management.

Margot ParrottMargot Parrott
Margot Parrott earned her B.A. degree in Theatre & Speech from the University of South Carolina in 1985 and has spent 23 years working professionally in theatre education/administration. She has held a variety of positions for The Children's Theatre of Charlotte (ImaginOn) and is currently responsible for negotiating all royalty contracts for the theatre. In addition, she serves as the performance coordinator for their touring company, the Tarradiddle Players. Originally from Lexington, SC, Margot is the daughter of another council member, Hugh Rogers.

Francis PersonFrancis Person
Francis John Person received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of South Carolina in 2005. He attended Carolina on a full athletic scholarship, and was a four year varsity football letter winner. He played under the tutelage of legendary coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier. He is currently the Special Assistant and Personal Aide to the Vice President of the United States, Joseph Biden. He began working for then-Senator Biden (DE) in Washington, DC, upon graduating from Carolina.

Tommy PrestonTommy Preston, Jr.
Tommy Preston graduated cum laude from USC with a degree in political science. During his time at USC, he was involved in Student Government, various university committees and organizations, served as a Resident Advisor, interned for a U.S. Senator, volunteered in the community, and served as the Student Representative on the University's Board of Trustees. As USC Student Body President, Tommy was responsible for the creation of Cocky's Reading Express, a statewide literacy initiative and the USC Student Congressional Advisory Board.

David RembertDavid Rembert
David Rembert completed his B.S. (1959) and M.S. (1964) degrees in biological sciences at USC. He received his Ph.D. in biological sciences at the University of Kentucky at Lexington in 1967. He has taught at Converse College in Spartanburg, at the University of Kentucky, and at the University of South Carolina from 1967 until his retirement in July 1998. During his tenure at the University, he was promoted through the academic ranks to full professor and at his retirement, he was appointed Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences.

Hugh RogersHugh Rogers
Hugh Rogers completed his Bachelors degree in English at the University of South Carlina in 1951 and his Juris Doctor at the USC School of Law in 1954. Since 1966 he has practiced law in the town of Lexington, South Carolina, where he also formerly served as mayor. He is a retired Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, having served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps with distinction, a past president of the Greater USC Alumni Association, and a member of the USC Guardian Society.

Keith SandersKeith Sanders
Keith Sanders is a 1978 graduate of USC in history with over 27 years experience in the fields of construction and architecture. He is currently a Project Architect with CDA Architects in Columbia, SC, who focuses on Historic Preservation / Restoration and Sustainable Design / Development Projects. He is a current member of the Board of Directors serving as Chair of the Advocacy Committee, and past President of the U.S. Green Building Council SC Chapter. He also serves as Chair of the American Institute of Architects SC Committee on the Environment.

Thomas SayettaThomas Sayetta
Thomas Sayetta completed his Ph.D. in physics at the University of South Carolina in 1964, after receiving his undergraduate degree in phyics in 1959. He is an associate professor emeritus with East Carolina University. With a research focus on magnetic resonance, Thomas has authored articles for academic journals such as the American Journal of Phyics, and numerous physics laboratory manuals. Since his retirement in 1995 he has continued to teach physics part time. He also enjoys staying active as a part-time tennis player.

Steve ShafferSteve Shaffer
Steve Shaffer received a B.S. in physics from the university in 1965. After five years active duty in the United States Navy, he returned to USC and received a Ph.D. in Solid State Physics in 1975. First working for General Electric then N.V. Philips, Steve worked three years in the Netherlands, returning to Columbia as a research manager for a local Philips Electronics company. Retiring as a Navy Captain and full time researcher in 2003, he now consults with St Jude Medical and teaches at Midlands when a physics adjunct is needed.

Allan ShoemakerAllan Shoemaker
Alan Shoemaker received a B.S. degree in biology from Furman University (1967) and in 1972 he obtained an M.S. degree in biology from Carolina. He worked at Riverbanks Zoological Park from 1972 until his retirement in May, 2002. While there, he held the position of Curator of Mammals and Collection Manager. Active in the conservation of rare and endangered animals, Allan has authored over 125 refereed and professional papers. In recognition for his work in the America Zoo Association (AZA), Alan was made an Honorary member of the AZA in 2003.

Dee SilverthornDee Silverthorn
Dee Silverthorn received a B.S. with Honors in biology from Tulane University in 1970 and a Ph.D. in marine science from USC's Baruch Institute in 1973. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches physiology. Her bench research focuses on epithelial transport. Dee is an active member of the American Physiological Society and the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society, and is a member of the Education Committee of the International Union of Physiological Sciences.

James StevensJames Stevens
James Stevens received degrees in Physics and Math from Wofford College prior to his Ph.D. in Physics from USC in 1975. He served as a research associate at Savannah River Laboratory and Case Western Reserve University before teaching at North Georgia College. He worked with Philips Electronics/BCC in Columbia, SC, in various positions ending with Manager of Product Development. He later served as technology consultant to several electronic firms in the Southeast and is now semi-retired with occasional consulting and teaching assignments.

Michael TongourMichael Alexander Tongour
Michael Tongour completed his B.A. in political science in 1978 at Carolina, and his Juris Doctor in 1981 from the USC School of Law. In 1996 he founded TCH Group, LLC, a full service government relations consulting firm that provides strategic guidance and lobbying services to its select group of clients. Over the last 15 years, he has compiled a successful record  representing clients in a variety of areas and sectors including energy and environmental policy, health care, tax, appropriations, education policy, national security, and Federal legal policy.

Kim WaddellKim J. Waddell
Kim Waddell is a senior program officer with the Ocean Studies Board of the National Research Council. He received his Ph.D in biology from USC in 1996. He recently rejoined the NRC after a 6-year hiatus during which he was a research associate professor at the University of the Virgin Islands and Texas A&M University working on building marine and environmental research capacity in the Caribbean. Kim's research interests include sustainable agriculture, capacity building in small island developing states, and fisheries management.

Mary Baskin WatersMary Baskin Waters
Mary earned her undergraduate degree in art studio in 1985, her master's in art education in 1987, and her Ph.D. in higher educational leadership and policies in 2002, all from USC. She is Founder and CEO of Albion Research Associates, LLC, a grant writing and grants development firm. She is also currently affiliate faculty in the Women's and Gender Studies Program and teaches "Women in Society: A Service Learning Approach." Additionally, she is affiliate faculty in the MPA Program in the Department of Political Science, where she teaches Grants Administration.

Kevin WhiteKevin White
Kevin White graduated from USC with a B.A. in psychology in 2005. In 2007 he joined the USC Child Development and Research Center where he created an additional four-year-old kindergarten classroom. In 2011 he joined the Nurturing Center as a Family Service Coordinator, a family-focused, therapeutic treatment center for child abuse and neglect. Kevin recently joined the Hammond School where he is currently the Extended Day Director and Director of Summer Camps. He is also a Life Member of the Carolina Alumni Association, and he is on the Executive Board of the Young Alumni Council..

Mark WillMark Will
Mark earned his B.S. in marine science from USC in 1976. As Director in the South and North Carolina territory for Expense Reduction Analysts, Will is focused on improving the profitability of clients located in the two state region. He is active in supporting both client management and analytical requirements with a keen focus on their overall satisfaction and financial success. Prior to joining ERA, he served in executive roles at Milliken & Company, a recognized quality leader in manufacturing textiles and chemicals.
