Dr. Henrie Monteith Treadwell

The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to recognize Dr. Henrie Monteith Treadwell as our alumnae of the month for May. She was recently awarded the 2006 College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding contributions to the field of medicine. Dr. Treadwell received a BS in Biology from the University of South Carolina where she enrolled as the first African American student as a result of a desegregation lawsuit. She went on to receive her master's in Biology from Boston University and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Atlanta University. Dr. Treadwell also completed postdoctoral work at the Harvard University School of Public Health.

Currently, Dr. Treadwell is Senior Social Scientist and Associate Director of Development in the National Center for Primary Care at Morehouse School of Medicine. The mission of the National Center for Primary Care is to promote excellence in community oriented primary health care and optimal health outcomes for all Americans, with a special focus on underserved populations and on the elimination of health disparities. Her major responsibilities include program oversight and management for a special informing policy initiative, Community Voices (www.communityvoices.org), which is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and oversight of the men's health programs that were funded as a special cluster by the Kellogg Foundation but that are managed by the National Center for Primary Care.

Previously, Dr. Treadwell served for 16 years as program director at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan, where she was responsible for program design, oversight, and administration of strategic initiatives to improve access to health coverage and services for the design of leadership development programs.

Her career has included chairing the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Morris Brown College, a Historically Black College and University. She is recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Kellogg National Fellowship Program and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences Faculty Fellowship Award. She has served as consultant to many national organizations including the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health, and the Department of Health and Human Services Health Careers Opportunity Program, among others.

Dr. Treadwell is a published author of numerous monographs and peer reviewed articles. She is a member of the Editorial Board for the American Journal of Public Health and serves as board member of the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. Dr. Treadwell is also a member of several professional organizations including the American Public Health Association, Academy Health, Women in Philanthropy, and Sigma Xi. She is a member of several organizations dedicated to community services including Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. and The Links, Inc. Dr. Treadwell also serves on the University of South Carolina College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors.
