ALUMNI/FRIEND OF THE MONTH - September 2005
Dr. John Herr, Jr., Distinguished Professor Emeritus-Biology
Dr. John Herr may be one of Carolina's best-kept philanthropic secrets. Since joining the faculty in 1959 and even beyond his retirement in 1993, Dr. Herr has been an avid supporter of the arts and sciences.
As an active volunteer with the university's A.C. Moore Herbarium, Dr. Herr was responsible for establishing the W.T. Batson Endowment for the A.C. Moore Herbarium. This fund was created in honor of Dr. W.T. Batson, Dr. Herr's colleague, friend and mentor, who is one of Carolina's most beloved and appreciated emeritus faculty members. Dr. Herr also coordinates an annual fund raising campaign for the endowment.
Dr. Herr and his wife Lucrecia have many interests that are not limited to the sciences. Both have been generous sponsors of the Thomas Cooper Society and attend university sponsored concerts and theater productions. The Herr's have also contributed to the Family Fund and other University campaigns for more that 30 years. Most recently they have established a fund in recognition of the work of South Carolina planter, and botanist, Henry W. Ravenel.
Though retired for a number of years, Dr. Herr is still active with his research and is an officer with the Association of Southeastern Biologists. He is also the curator of the Roman Vishniac Biological Film Collection located in the Thomas Cooper Library.
We are honored to be associated with Dr. John Herr and look forward to his active involvement with the College for many years to come.
