2008 Recognition of Excellence Dinner

On March 14, 2008 the USC College of Arts and Sciences hosted its annual Recognition of Excellence dinner at the Riverbanks Zoo honoring those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement or made significant contributions to the University and their communities. Recipients were:

Institutional Support Award: Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office
Dean's Award : Dr. Donald L. Fowler, Political Science
Distinguished Service Award: Mr. Keith L. Sanders, History
Outstanding Graduate Alumnus Award: Dr. B.J. Casey, Psychology
Distinguished Young Alumnus Award: Mr. Michael S. Holt, History
Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award: Rear Admiral Jacob L. Shuford, English

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. and its affiliate in Atlanta represent the interests of the government and people of the Republic of China on Taiwan and actively promote close and friendly relations between Taiwan and the United States.  For almost two decades TECRO/TECO has generously supported Taiwan-related programs of the College of Arts and Sciences Center for Asian Studies and the Richard L. Walker Institute of International and Area Studies.

Dr. Donald Fowler is a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina. He received a BA in psychology from Wofford College and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in political science.  He began teaching at the University of South Carolina in 1964, where he continues as an adjunct professor of American Politics in the Department of Political Science. He is the Chairman of the Board of Fowler Communications, Inc., an advertising and public relations firm, and of Khare/Fowler Incorporated, a governmental relations firm.   Don has also continued to serve as Chairman of the College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors since its inception in 2005. 

Mr. Keith Sanders is a 1978 graduate of the University of South Carolina in History with over 27 years experience in the fields of construction and architecture.  A Registered Architect in South Carolina and LEED Accredited Professional, Keith is currently a Project Architect with CDA Architects in Columbia, South Carolina, who focuses on Historic Preservation/Restoration and Sustainable Design/Development Projects. He is a founding member, current member of the Board of Directors serving as Chair of the Advocacy Committee, and past President of the U.S. Green Building Council South Carolina Chapter.

Dr. B.J. Casey is the Sackler Professor and Director of the Sackler Institute at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. She is a pioneer in novel uses of neuroimaging methodologies to examine behavioral and brain development. Her research focuses on the development, disruption and neurobiological basis of attention and affect regulation.  She has been examining the normal development of brain circuitry involved in attention and behavioral regulation and how disruptions in these brain systems (prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia and cerebellum) can give rise to a number of developmental disorders.

Mr. Michael Holt was born and raised in Hartsville, SC.  Educated in the public schools of Darlington County, he graduated from Hartsville High School in 1988.  He attended the University of South Carolina where he majored in History and received a Minor in South Carolina Studies.  During that time he was also a member of Kappa Alpha Order as well as the Student Alumni Association.  After graduating in 1992, Michael attended the Carolina School of Law where he graduated in 1996.  He was sworn in to the South Carolina Bar in November 1996 and began practicing law in his hometown of Hartsville. 

Rear Admiral Shuford was commissioned in 1974, from the NROTC program at the University of South Carolina.  In 1979, he was selected as an Olmsted Scholar and studied two years in France at the Paris Institute of Political Science. He also holds masters' degrees in Public Administration from Harvard and in National Security Studies and Strategy from the Naval War College, where he graduated with Highest Distinction.  He assumed command of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island on August 12, 2004.  He is the 51st officer to serve as President since the College was founded in 1884.
