Topper Site Pavilion Dedication Ceremony
Approximately 150 people turned out on Saturday, October 21st, for the Pavilion Dedication at the archaeological dig site in Allendale County known as the Topper site. The morning started with archaeological exhibits and educational materials at the picnic area located on the Clariant Corporation property. Afterwards, guests drove to the dig site for a brief tour. Dr. Al Goodyear, Director of the Allendale Paleoindian Expedition at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA), gave a brief talk about the Topper site and explained how the new building protects this very delicate but historically significant site.
Dr. Thorne Compton, Interim Director of SCIAA, spoke on behalf of USC President Andrew Sorensen and Dean Mary Ann Fitzpatrick (College of Arts and Sciences) about how important this site is, not only to USC, but also to the field of archaeology. New signs were posted listing donors who have made this building possible. Dr. Goodyear gave accolades to Clariant Corporation which has so graciously and willingly accommodated this research and provided support. Another such donor is Mrs. Betty Stringfellow of John’s Island, SC, shown here proudly displaying her plaque. Following the declaration, guests were treated to a wonderful South Carolina barbeque luncheon in the picnic area.
