Sponsored by the Departments of Languages, Literature, and Cultures, Philosophy, and Political Science

The Futures of Human Rights: Moral, Legal, and Political Cultures
February 26-28, 2009

The idea of human rights is frequently invoked in national and international discussions and yet never has this idea been so contested as it is today. This interdisciplinary conference is designed to open dialogue about the future of human rights. We welcome academic or creative submissions addressing the philosophical, legal, political, literary, sociological, or technological questions of human rights. We seek presentations that speak simultaneously to the issues of specific disciplines and to the general interests of the citizen, so that a common conversation can develop during the course of the conference. Papers should take no more than twenty minutes to read.

Send 500-word abstracts and 50-word bios for each presenter to: Meili Steele, Dept. of English, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208, steelem@sc.edu.  The deadline is Nov. 15, 2008.

Speakers:
Paul Kahn, Yale, Law
Costas Douzinas, university of London, Law
Chiara Bottici, University of Florence, Philosophy
Attracta Ingram, University of College Dublin, Politics and International Relations
John Wallach, Cuny, Political Science
John McGowan, University of North Carolina, English
