VIII. LINGUISTICS

IX. FILM
Students will be required to see fifteen films and read chapters I and II of Esthétique du film. The films will be available in the Liberal Arts media center. As some of these films are presented as part of the French 397 course which is taught every year, students may see them as their schedules permit (and attend discussions as auditors) in preparation for the examination. Some, but by no means all, of these films would be presented in a graduate level course taught as the rotation of courses permits.

Students will be expected to be able to relate films to their historical background, to analyze the relationship of film form to the articulation of ideas and themes in particular films, and to compare and contrast films on this basis.
