Comprehensive Exams

Reading Proficiency

Comprehensive Exams for MA, MAT & PhD: Comprehensive examinations for MA, MAT and PhD candidates will next be held on: January 8, 2009.

The second day for students taking the MA in Spanish and the comprehensive exam for the PhD in Comparative Literature will be January 9, 2009.

Make-up exams will next be held on: Friday, April 3, 2009.

Exams generally begin at 9:00am and are held at the Ted Mimms Language Laboratory in the Humanities Classroom Building. Examinees are expected to write their answers on computer, and will be provided one by the lab. Completed exams are then e-mailed as attachments to the graduate director directly from the lab for subsequent distribution to the committee.

Graduate Reading Proficiency Exams

Chinese | French | German | Japanese | LatinRussian Spanish

The Graduate Reading Proficiency Exam is for graduate students who are majoring in other disciplines. French, German, Latin, and Spanish 315 are designed to prepare students to take the examination(s) that satisfies the basic FL graduate reading requirement. The courses are available on a pass / fail basis only.


French Graduate Reading Exam :

The next graduate reading examination in French will be on Monday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. in HU 317

Students need not be enrolled in FR 315 in order to take the exam. Students may prepare for the exam by consulting Edward M. Stack: Reading French in the Arts and Sciences (4th Ed.) and by doing practice translations in their field of study.

The field exam is 90 minute translation examination of a 500-word passage (with dictionary) in the individual’s field of specialization. Students can expect that the passage will be similar in linguistic sophistication to English texts germane to the particular field of research.

Students should bring their own bluebooks to the exam.

FREN 315 WILL NOT BE OFFERED DURING SUMMER I OR SUMMER II, NOR WILL ANY FIELD EXAMS BE ADMINISTERED OVER THE SUMMER. STUDENTS WHO NEED TO TAKE THE FRENCH GRADUATE READING PROFICIENCY EXAM SHOULD PLAN TO TAKE IT IN SPRING 2008. French 315 will again be offered in spring, 2009. A reading proficiency exam will be administered in Spring, 2009 during finals week.

Please email Jeanne Garane (garanej@sc.edu) the week before the exam to sign up. Please write French Reading Proficiency Exam in the memo box. Include the following information in the e-mail:

Name
Field of study (this will be the area covered by the exam)
Advisor to be notified of passing grade


German Reading exam
The German Reading exam for the Spring 2008 semester will be offered on February 20 (starting at 2:30pm), April 2 (starting at 2:30pm), and May 1 (starting at 2:00pm). The texts are approximately 400 words and candidates have two hours. You may use a dictionary. You must give written notice of intent to take the exam per e-mail. Please contact Dr. Nicholas Vazsonyi at vazsonyi@sc.edu at least one week in advance of the exam to reserve a spot. In your e-mail, please include your full name, degree sought and the name of your graduate director.

Spanish Reading Examination Information

Students may take ANY written materials to the examination: dictionaries, verb lists, vocabulary list, grammar books, etc. (all electronic dictionaries or devices are prohibited). The examination is a 500 word passage in the student's area of expertise: history, English, Political Science, etc. They have one hour in which to render the passage into English. Results are available within 24 hours. Dr. Hill will e-mail the results to them.
