The program through which the University of South Carolina will
direct its summer school abroad in Spain is hosted by the Spanish
School Audiogil, located in the beautiful Mediterranean coastal
city of Castellón, approximately two-and-a-half hours south
of Barcelona, Spain's second largest city, and one hour north of
Valencia, Spain's third largest city.
Our program provides students with room and board through home stays
with families and room and half-board in three-star hotels, two
courses (one grammar/literature, one culture/conversation), weekend
excursions (Peñíscola and Morella, Valencia, and Barcelona),
and mid-week excursions to local places of interest (Benicasim,
Sagunto, the Fine Arts Museum, and the Lladrò Factory). Further,
there will be a nine-day guided tour of Andalucía (Granada,
Sevilla, and Córdoba) and Madrid (including the Prado Museum)
and its environs (San Lorenzo del Escorial, Segovia, and Toledo).
Also, other cultural activities have been scheduled (city tour of
Castellón, Paella Dinner, Evening of Tapas).
The program boasts a highly qualified, versatile teaching staff
and level-appropriate courses. Students receive 6 undergraduate
credit hours (3 from USC for SPAN 350; 3 to transfer directly from
Audiogil) or 3 USC graduate credit hours (SPAN 550) upon successful
completion of the course work and participation in all mid-week,
weekend, and end of course excursions and tours, which are approved
and supervised by the USC Director. The Director will also administer
pertinent oral and written examinations during the session in order
to monitor and assess the students' academic progress. Travel to
Spain requires a passport. Participants are required to have health
insurance and must submit a Health Statement with their applications
to the program.
The program cost will be approximately $4,000 for 6 undergraduate
credits and approximately $4,200 for 3 graduate credits, pending
a final participant count and the exchange rate of the Dollar against
the Euro at the time of the transfer of funds from the US to Spain
in payment for program costs. Applications to the program must be
completed and received by February 15, 2008, and
accompanied by a $100 non-refundable deposit (to be deducted from
the total cost of the program). The second payment of $1000 is due
by February 28, 2008. The third payment of $1000
is due by March 31, 2008. The balance is due April
29, 2008. Although the cost of airfare is not included
in the program costs, the Director will organize an optional (but
strongly recommended) round-trip group flight between the United
States and Spain, the payment of which will be made through a designated
travel agent in Columbia.
The exchange rate as of December 6, 2005 is approximately 1 Euro
~ 1.18 US$. Spending will vary from student to student, but it is
recommended to allow for approximately $50 per week for entertainment
purposes.
