and Awards
The Kyrl Leighton-Faxford de Gravelines Scholarship
is awarded each year to one, two or three students majoring in foreign
language who demonstrate:
- A sincere desire to teach foreign languages as a career as evidenced
by a statement from the candidate and recommendations of teachers.
- Clear excellence in the candidate’s academic record, particularly
in the language of study as evidenced by a transcript and vita.
Each candidate’s nomination dossier should include a vita,
an up-to-date transcript, a personal statement of career intention,
and two letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the
candidate’s work. The dossier needs to be submitted to the
respective Program Director by March 31.
Scholarship recipients will be announced by April 15 of each year.
The scholarships are awarded as tuition remission for the following
fall semester at USC-Columbia.
The Francis W. Bradley Award in Romance Languages
is given in honor of a foreign language professor who was at USC-Columbia
in the 1920s. The recipient must be a major in French or Spanish
who meets the following criteria:
1.) Non-native learner of the language major
2.) Has completed at least 12 credits (209 and above) of the language
with a grade of B or A in each courses taken
3.) Must have a overall GPR of 2.75 in 60 or more semester hours
credit
One award is given annually, one year to Spanish, the next year
to French.
The Sigma Delta Pi Spanish
Honorary Society - Chi Chapter is open to Spanish majors with outstanding
academic records.
