The
Master of Arts in Teaching Foreign Language
SPANISH OPTION
The Master of Arts in Teaching Foreign Languages-Spanish is an interdisciplinary
degree awarded by the Graduate School and offered jointly by the
College of Education and the Department of Languages, Literatures,
and Cultures.
This Master’s program prepares future teachers to teach Spanish
in secondary schools. The M.A.T. in Spanish is designed for university
or college graduates of liberal arts programs who wish to fulfill
requirements for teacher certification in Spanish in the public
schools and to pursue graduate study in Spanish and in Education.
A pre-professional teaching internship year is required. In order
to be eligible for the Internship Year, the student must successfully
complete an oral proficiency interview administered by one of the
Department’s designated evaluators. Students are expected
to demonstrate oral proficiency equivalent to the Advanced level,
as described by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign
Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines.
The M.A.T. requires 21 hours of graduate courses in the Specialty
Teaching Area (Spanish), in addition to 36 hours of course work
Education, a total of 57 credit hours. Courses in Spanish include
literature, linguistics and cultural studies. Education courses
include studies in human growth and psychology, foreign languages
and secondary education, and teaching with technology.
To complete the degree students must pass a comprehensive oral and
written examination. A written final project is required that combines
their content area with their pedagogical studies and practice.
