Hardee-Belasco Scholarship Fund Purpose: The
purpose of the Hardee-Belasco Scholarship is to reward undergraduate
French majors for academic achievement. Eligibility: advanced French
major, the French program stage of a rising senior (minimum of 18
hrs. at 300 & above completed or in progress). Selection: performance
based, with financial need a secondary consideration only when more
than one candidate of equal academic qualifications are in competition
for the award(s) (Need as documented by the Student Financial Aid
office). Minimum GPA in French: 3.5; minimum overall GPA: 3.0. Frequency:
Awards are made for individual semesters. Amount:
$250.00 minimums. Term of award: award made by semester with a maximum
of two semesters (normally consecutive). Applications must include 3 recommendations from faculty and a transcript.
The Amy B. Millstone Scholarship for Study Abroad
Purpose: The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist students to
participate in study abroad programs in francophone countries. Eligibility:
USC undergraduate French majors and graduate students preparing
French degrees (M.A. in French , M.A.T. , I.M.A. ). Candidates must
have been accepted by a department-approved study abroad program.
Selection: Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in French. Awards
will be made based primarily on performance in French courses at
USC. French GPA and overall GPA are primary determinants. Frequency:
Annually. Amount: Variable. Term of award: a single semester
or summer term or full academic year. Process: Students need to
furnish a statement of purpose, a transcript and two recommendations
from (preferably French) faculty. N.B. Funds should be used primarily
to defray travel costs and tuition.
The Philip A. Wadsworth Scholarship Purpose: The
purpose of the Wadsworth Scholarship is to assist students to participate
in study abroad programs in France. Eligibility: USC undergraduate
French majors and graduate students preparing French degrees (M.A.
in French , M.A.T. , I.M.A. ). Candidates must have been accepted
by a department-approved study abroad program. Selection: Demonstration
of exceptional potential in French studies as determined by performance
and faculty recommendation. Students must have a minimum GPA of
3.0 in French. Frequency: Annually. Amount: Variable, $250.00
minimum. Term of award: a single semester or summer term or full
academic year. Process: Students need to furnish a statement of
purpose, a transcript and two recommendations from (preferably
French) faculty. N.B. Funds should be used primarily to defray travel
costs and tuition.
The French Alumni Scholarship for study in France
Purpose: The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist students to
participate in study abroad programs in France. Eligibility: USC
undergraduate French majors and graduate students preparing French
degrees (M.A. in French , M.A.T. , I.M.A. ). Candidates must have
been accepted by a department-approved study abroad program. Selection:

The Derial Jackson Memorial Scholarship for Study
in Tours, France Purpose: The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist
students to participate in the USC summer study abroad program at
the Institut de Touraine, Tours, France. Eligibility: USC undergraduate
and graduate students enrolling in the USC in Tours program. Selection:
Awards will be made based primarily on performance in French courses
at USC. French GPA and overall GPA are primary determinants. Frequency:
Annually. Amount: Variable. Term of award:
one summer. Process: Students need to furnish a statement of purpose,
a transcript and two recommendation forms from (preferably French)
faculty. N.B. Funds should be used primarily to defray travel costs
and tuition.
The Elizabeth Joiner Study Abroad Award for French
Minors Purpose: The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist students
to participate in study abroad programs in France and other francophone
countries. Eligibility: USC undergraduate students seeking to minor
in French,regardless of major field. Candidates must have been accepted
by a department-approved study abroad program. Selection: Students
must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in French courses and must have completed
FREN 209 and FREN 210 prior to departure for study abroad. Awards
will be made based primarily on performance in French courses at
USC. French GPA and overall GPA are primary determinants. Frequency:
Annually. Amount: Variable. Term of award: a single semester
or summer term. Process: Students need to furnish a statement of
purpose, a transcript and two recommendation forms from (preferably
French) faculty.

The Francis W. Bradley Award in Romance Languages is to reward undergraduate French and Spanish majors for academic achievement. Eligibility: advanced French major (senior or rising senior - minimum of 18 hours at the 300-level and above completed or in progress). Minimum GPA in French of 3.5; minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Awards are are available to French students in alternating years. Amount: variable. Application or nominations must be made no later than the semester of graduation. Two French faculty recommendations and a transcript.
The Kyrl Leighton-Faxford de Gravelines Scholarship is awarded each year to one, two or three students majoring in foreign language who demonstrate:
1. A sincere desire to teach foreign languages as a career as evidenced by a statement from the candidate and recommendations of teachers.
2. Clear excellence in the candidate’s academic record, particularly in the language of study as evidenced by a transcript and vita.
Each candidate’s nomination dossier should include a vita, an up-to-date transcript, a personal statement of career intention, and two letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the candidate’s work. The dossier needs to be submitted to the respective Program Director by March 1.
Scholarship recipients will be announced by April 15 of each year. The scholarships are awarded as tuition remission for the following fall semester at USC-Columbia.
The Carol Kososki Scholarship will be awarded to provide support for a worthy student interested in studying the French language and culture first hand on an exchange program in France. Candidate(s) must have been accepted by a department approved study abroad program (semester or year) and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in French courses.
