Majors are encouraged to study in Russia for a summer, semester, or
year, and they can rely on faculty to help them choose the most suitable
program. USC is affiliated with ACTR, one of the oldest and best-established
programs for study in Russia. ACTR requires that all participants
have at least two years of college-level Russian study and thus is
able to offer more rigorous programs. ACTR offers semester, summer,
and year-long programs; small-group language instruction; opportunities
to audit courses in your field of specialization; and seminars on
culture, history, politics, and contemporary mass media. A business
language/internship program is available. Credit is awarded via Bryn
Mawr College, so transferring credits usually works fairly easily.
As with any study abroad plans, however, students are cautioned to
check with their academic advisor about transfer credit before
leaving on the program.
USC students have benefited from several other programs in addition
to ACTR. In recent years students have studied on programs offered
by ACTR, CIEE, and AIFS. Almost all state and university grants
apply to study abroad, and some programs offer their own financial
aid. USC students have also been successful in receiving NSEP grants
from the government for study in Russia.
Deadlines for most established study abroad programs are in the
fall for study in the following spring semester, and in the spring
for summer study and for the following academic year. For specific
deadlines, and for further information about the various options,
check the web sites for individual study
abroad programs.
In conjunction with the South Carolina Honors College, the Russian
Program has made possible opportunities for research-based learning
trips to Russia. A summer 2000 project, led by Dr. Ogden and Dr.
Douglas Williams, enabled 11 USC students to select and explore
individual research topics, working with a Russian partner, at Lake
Baikal, Irkutsk, and the Sayan Mountains; for details, see Dr. Ogden's
article "Research-Based
Learning at Baikal and Beyond: A New Paradigm for Study Abroad".
Please contact Dr. Ford, the
study-abroad advisor, for further information about any of these
opportunities.
