General guidelines concerning advisement periods:
- SPANISH MAJORS: You may find your advisor on your VIP. For reasons of informational security and privacy (FERPA), advisee names are not listed here.
To find your advisor through VIP:
1. Go to www.vip.sc.edu and log in as usual
2. Click on the "Academics" link
3. Click on "Show me" beside the "Registration Eligibility/Advisor Information for". (Be sure that the correct semester is indicated in the drop-down box.) -
Once you have determined who your advisor is, go to that professor’s office to sign up for your advisement interview. Only the assigned advisor will have your file and can advise you.
-
Be prepared for your interview: make up a tentative listing of the courses you need and write out the questions you will ask. Be on time. For additional questions related to study abroad, career issues, or other matters not germane to semester advisement, you will want to schedule another appointment.
To see your Academic Progress Report:- Go to www.vip.sc.edu and log in as usual
- Click on the "Academics" link
- Click on "Student Progress Report" under "Grades and Transcripts"
- If no advisor is listed for you on vip or outside of welsh 719, sign up for a time with prof. Miller (welsh 719).
- Spanish Minors (and other Majors) should complete the Study Abroad Approval Form with advisors in the Study Abroad Office and their own Academic Advisors with the form signed by the Dean of their own college.
- Non-majors and minors should follow the guidelines regarding credits outlined below for Spanish minors.
Spanish Transfer Credit: The policy of the Program in Spanish regarding transfer credit to be applied to a Spanish minor is:
a. At least half of the 18 hours (at least three courses) for the minor must be taken on the Columbia campus.
b. Content determines how the course counts, not language of instruction. EX: Arte de España is a fine arts course, not a Spanish course. Courses that may count for the major or minor must be in one of these four areas:
Spanish Language
Hispanic culture/Civilization
Spanish Linguistics
Hispanic Literatures
c. SPAN 309 (the only course required for the minor and a prerequisite for the Spanish major) cannot be substituted by a single course taken abroad. However, as student taking Spanish language courses in consecutive semesters abroad (a year-long program) may exempt Spanish 309 and continue with higher-level courses upon return.
