Bienvenidos to the Spanish program at the University of South Carolina. The Spanish program is the largest language program at the university, with over 100 sections offered in the fall of 2005 and a full-time faculty of 26 professors and instructors. Spanish is one of the most popular majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, and also has over 230 minors, many of whom are majoring in disciplines in other colleges, most notably in business administration. We offer a variety of advanced courses in addition to the usual language, literature, and culture offerings, including Spanish and Latin-American film, Spanish for business and professions, Spanish for heritage speakers, a theatre performance class, a cross-cultural course with a service-learning component, and contemporary topics, area studies, and linguistics courses. Many of our faculty also teach in the Comparative Literature, Latin American Studies, and Linguistics degree programs. We sponsor USC summer study abroad programs in Spain (Summer I) and Latin America (Summer II) and encourage and facilitate semester-abroad experiences for all majors and minors. We offer the B.A., M.A. and M.T. and M.A.T. degrees in Spanish and participate in masters and doctoral programs in Comparative Literature and Linguistics.

Beginning in Fall 2006, University Housing and the Program in Spanish will sponsor the Spanish House, a residential Spanish-immersion living experience with on-going activities to enhance opportunities to practice Spanish on a daily basis. Open to upperclass students who have completed at least one intermediate-level Spanish course.

The Spanish Program also coordinates a Community Outreach program to make both students and faculty aware of volunteer opportunities in which they can utilize their Spanish skills to serve the Hispanic community of Columbia.

Note: All Spanish courses at the intermediate level and beyond are taught in the target language, unless otherwise noted.
