The Open Book, sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and hosted by Elise Blackwell, is a literary series, public course, and community read all in one. The 2012 visiting writers are, in order of appearance: Colum McCann, Luis Alberto Urrea, Ann Patchett, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Ian McEwan. All events are free and open to the public. Jointly sponsored by the English department and the Thomas Cooper Library, the Fall Literary Festival features nationally- and internationally-acclaimed writers who read from their work to an audience of students, faculty, staff, and the general community.

Housed in the English department and headed up by Professor Kwame Dawes, the Poetry Initiative is a statewide organization that works with libraries, museums, schools, and other organizations to promote and celebrate the reading, writing, and performing of poetry.

Led by a team of faculty and graduate students in the English Department, Split P Soup takes a passion for poetry and for the discovery of learning through poetry to schools around the state of South Carolina.
