The Student's Guide to First-Year English

As you prepare for classes, you may have questions about what English 101 and English 102 are like and what your instructor will expect of you:

  • How many papers will you have to write?
  • How will your work be graded?
  • Is there an attendance policy?
  • Where on campus can you get special help with your writing?

The Student’s Guide to First-Year English is designed to supplement your teacher’s course policies and answers these questions and many more. We think this information is so important, in fact, that we ask you to do two things:

  1. Read the guide carefully as soon as possible.
  2. Print out and sign the Academic Responsibility Statement and turn it in to your teacher, indicating that you understand the basic policies of the First-Year English program.

The following links will take you through the guide.

Remember to refer to the guide as needed until you complete English 101 and 102. If you have any questions about the information, please feel free to ask your instructor or contact the First-Year English Program.
