African American Literature / Black  Diaspora Studies

The English Department at the University of South Carolina continues its hiring initiative in African American Literature and Black Diaspora Studies with a search this year to fill an Assistant Professor position.  Our initiative aims to bring together scholars working in traditionally defined fields with scholars whose work straddles and challenges conventional disciplinary boundaries.  Candidates should demonstrate an active engagement with the theories and methodologies currently informing the study of African American and Black Diaspora literatures and cultures.  These methodologies might include (but are not limited to) postcolonial, psychoanalytic, feminist, critical race, rhetorical, and/or Marxist approaches.  We welcome applications from highly-qualified candidates working in any genre or area; we are especially interested in the following areas: pre-1900 African American Literature; the African Diaspora in the American South; African American Literary or Cultural Theory; Black Trans-Atlantic Cultural Studies.  Candidates must hold the PhD at the time of appointment (August 2009) and demonstrate clear potential for excellence in scholarship and teaching.   To assure full consideration, applications must be received by October 31, 2008.  Please send application letter, a vita, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample to William E. Assistant Professor of Rhetoric

The Program in Speech Communication & Rhetoric in the English Department at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Rhetoric. For this appointment, beginning in August 2009, the program seeks an individual with interest and expertise in critical, cultural and/or performance-based approaches to the theory and practice of rhetoric. Applications are particularly encouraged from those working at one or more of the following intersections: rhetorical theory and aesthetics; rhetoric and contemporary culture; public rhetoric and law; rhetorical criticism and everyday life.

The Program in Speech Communication & Rhetoric at the University of South Carolina is closely aligned with the Department of English. As it seeks to build substantive bridges between various interpretations of rhetorical and communicative inquiry, the Speech Communication & Rhetoric faculty is committed to rigorous interdisciplinary scholarship and close collaboration with the program in Rhetoric & Composition. Ideal candidates will have an interest in contributing to this mission, along with an ability to complement the program’s current strengths in rhetorical theory, public and international discourse, rhetoric and technology, performance theory and criticism, feminist theory and criticism, and communication ethics.
