Audio Recording, Listening and Editing
The Center has two private recording areas available to faculty and students to prepare materials or complete speaking assignments. In addition, the PCs and Macs have recording capabilities.

Duplication and Conversion
The Mimms Center is equipped with a multi-standard VCR, which allows us to convert PAL video to NTSC video tape or DVD. We can also convert VHS and MiniDV video to VHS or DVD format. Please feel free to inquire about any additional format conversions or duplications that you may require.

Video Viewing
Viewing stations are available to anyone in the University community for watching anything from our extensive video collection. Region code-free viewing stations are available for international video materials. Small groups are welcome to use one of the Center’s private seminar rooms for their viewing assignments.

Computing

The FLLC features a dual platform, fully-networked computing center. The Center has a mix of  Macintosh and PC computers. Each of the computers has a full complement of software and hardware optimized for foreign language-learning and multimedia applications.

CD/DVD Mastering
CD/DVD mastering is available on both PC and Mac platforms.

Digital Media Editing
Faculty can use room 101C for digital video, image and audio editing. Students can use the computers in the Main Lab for digital media editing.

Computer-Assisted Language Learning
The Mimms Center maintains a wide assortment of language-learning software programs which represent a variety of pedagogical approaches. New purchases are made according to the recommendations of language faculty.

Checkout and Reservations

We require that all lab reservations be made by sending an e-mail to fllcrequest@sc.edu within 24 hours of the time of reservation.

International Satellite and TV Broadcasting

In addition to our extensive video library of foreign films, the FLLC subscribes to French, German, and Italian international satellite TV programming. Links to their program schedules can be found below.

All of these stations are broadcast through Gamecock Cable across the USC campus. Center staff will be happy to record programs for interested faculty and students.

Tutoring

Graduate assistants employed in the lab are fluent in one or more of the languages taught at USC. Many of our work-study students have also studied one or more foreign languages. These lab assistants are available to assist lab patrons with grammar or vocabulary questions. The individual language departments also offer tutoring for students.
