GEOGRAPHY NEWS and EVENTS
• Fulbright Grants Awarded
Sarah Schwartz received a a highly competitive Fulbright IIE Full Grant award to support her research on the links between HIV/AIDS prevention-related behaviors and gender roles and identities in Swaziland.
Denise Dunovant, a senior Geography major, also received a Fulbright Full Grant award to explore issues of livelihoods and resettlement in Uganda as the northern part of that country emerges from years of conflict.
Both awards are for 10 months of fieldwork, and include living and travel expenses.
• Ms. Clio Andris, a Master's degree candidate, won the Poster Presentation at the 2008 USC Graduate Student Day.
The award information will be available soon. Ms. Andris also has been awarded a
scholarship/fellowship by the Dept. of Defense to pursue her PhD in Information Sciences at MIT. The funding includes tuition, related educational fees and living expenses of $36,000 per year.
• Mr. Eric Tate, a Ph.D. candidate, won a 2008 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship. The Fellowship is awarded based on
abilities and accomplishments as well as on potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the U.S. science and engineering enterprise.
The stipend rate for 2008-09 is $30,000. More information about the fellowship is available at the NSF website.
• Dr. Diansheng Guo has received the prestigious NSF CAREER Award for 2008.
His award-winning research project, which will be funded over a 5-year period, will develop new computational and visual
approaches to discover and understand complex information in very large spatial interaction data sets such as the geographic movements of humans, diseases, and commodities.
• Dr. David Cowen has been named to the National Geospatial Advisory Committee. The new committee will advise the federal government on matters of geospatial
policy and management.
• Dr. Nancy von Meyer was presented with the prestigious Horwood Distinguished Service Award at the 45th Annual URISA Conference in Washington, DC this fall.

• Dr. Greg Carbonne is heading a team of USC researchers, including geography colleague,
Dr. Kirsten Dow, who have been awarded a $1.1 million NOAA grant for water-resource research.

• Dr. John Jensen was presented with the prestigious William T. Pecora award,
sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior and the NASA. It is awarded annually
in recognition of outstanding contributions toward understanding
the Earth through the use of remote sensing. To learn more about the award, visit the website

• Dr. Susan Cutter, Carolina Distinguished Professor and Director of the Hazards Research Lab, has
received a prestigious Decade of Behavior Research Award for the impact her research
has had on public policy.
• Dr. William L. Graf , Foundation University Professor and Professor of Geography, has received the Meredith F. Burrill Award,
his profession's highest award for environmental public policy contributions.
• Dr. Kirstin Dow and Dr. Ed Carr were among the scientists of the
Millennium Ecosystem Assessment whose research received the presitigious environmental award,
the Zayed Prize for Scientific and Technological Acheivement.

• Dr. William L. Graf , Foundation University Professor and Professor of Geography, is the
recipient of a 2005 John Wesley Powell Award, the U.S. Geological Survey’s highest award
for achievement.
