March 2008

    Ms. Clio Andris has received a scholarship/fellowship to pursue her PhD in Information Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The scholarship/fellowship is awarded under the Department of Defense Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Defense Education Program “SMART” Program. The program recognizes academically excellent students pursuing degrees in disciplines of particular interest to the (DoD). The funding includes tuition, related educational fees and living expenses of $36,000 per year. Under the program Clio is also eligible for summer internships at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR).

    Ms. Clio Andris won the Poster Presentation at the University of South Carolina Graduate Student Day for 2008. The award information will be on the USC web site soon.

    Mr. Eric Tate won a 2008 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship. This award is based on a students' abilities and accomplishments, as well as on potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the U.S. science and engineering programs. The stipend rate for 2008-09 is $30,000. Fellowships are funded for a maximum of three years and can be used in any three, year-long units over the five-year period after the initial award."

    Ms. Ke Liao, one of our graduate students, was this year's winner of the Transactions in GIS graduate student presentation prize. The prize was awarded at the UCGIS 2006 Summer Assembly. Ms. Liao's paper will be published in an upcoming issue of the journal.

    Dr. Kirstin Dow and Dr. Ed Carr were among the scientists of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment whose research received the presitigious environmental award, the Zayed Prize for Scientific and Technological Acheivement. Zayed Prize for Global Leadership on the Environment was awarded to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Click this link to read the BBC article.

    Dr. Dow was a coordinating lead author, responsible not only for writing most of her own chapter, but also as editor and coordinator of materials from the other authors. Dr. Carr was the lead author of his chapter, with responsibilities for planning and writing much of his chapter. Dr. Dow's chapter, "Vulnerable People and Places", was published in Ecosystems and Human Well-Being: Current States and Trends, Vol. 1. Dr. Carr's chapter, "Four Scenarios" was published in Ecosystems and Human Well-Being: Scenarios, Vol. 2.

    Dr. Will Graf , Foundation University Professor and Professor of Geography, is the recipient of a 2005 John Wesley Powell Award, the U.S. Geological Survey’s highest award for achievement. Read more about Dr. Graf and the prestigious award.

    Dr. Cary Mock has been awarded a grant of nearly $300,000 from the National Science Foundation to reconstruct U.S. hurricane history. Mock is one of the leading authorities on hurricane history in the Southeast. Using plantation diaries, ship logs, newspapers and other diaries, Mock has gone back hundreds of years to reconstruct the hurricane history of the American South. The grant will enable Mock to extend his focus from New England to the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas, collaborating with staff at the National Hurricane Center in Miami to assess past hurricane activity as it may relate to global warming.     At the at the 25th ESRI User Conference, Dr. David Cowen was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his excellence in Geographic Information Systems Technology. Read more about Dr. Cowen's achievements
