Strategic Plan
The Department of Geography is the only program in the state offering bachelors', master's and doctoral degrees in geography.
The Department has three major areas of responsibility: 1) scholarly research and graduate student education and training;
2) a strong teaching commitment to undergraduates as part of a comprehensive liberal arts education; and 3) statewide leadership
in the application of geographic knowledge in areas such as K-12 education, hazards analysis, environmental management, geodesy
and mapping, economic development and social/cultural change. The primary strength of the department is at the graduate level
with nationally and internationally recognized faculty scholars.
Our strategic goal remains essentially unchanged since 1993 when we became committed to achieving a top-ten ranking of all
Geography programs nationally and expanding our undergraduate mission within the College and University. We expect to meet
the former goal when the National Research Council rankings are revealed in 2002-2003. Our 2000-2005 goals are:
1) increase enrollments in geography courses especially at the undergraduate level; 2) increase the number of undergraduate majors;
3) maintain faculty productivity in terms of publications, grants, and professional service on national and international editorial boards;
4) maintain the excellence and high quality of the graduate program, placing more emphasis on doctoral education and;
5) provide regional and national leadership in Geography both in K-12 and higher education.
