05/04/2012: Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator, will address USC business, mass communications and information studies, nursing, pharmacy and public health graduates at 3 p.m., in the Colonial Life Arena.

04/2012: The State of the Knowledge report on Drought and Coastal Ecosystems in the Carolinas was finalized. A PDF of this document is available here. This report is the result of feedback provided to CISA after the Drought Impacts and Stresses on Coastal Ecosystems Workshop in March of 2010 (see below).

11/07/2011: A webinar focusing on the Southeast Regional Climate Assessment was held by Dr. Kirstin Dow and Dr. Lynne Carter to gather information on mitigation and adaptation efforts being conducted in the Southeast. For more information about the National and Southeast Climate Assessments see the full presentation.

10/13-14/2010: S.C. Water Resources Conference meets in Columbia, organized around the theme Science and Policy Challenges for a Sustainable Future. CISA presentations included those by Lauren Felker, Jay Fowler, Erik Kabela, Kirsten Lackstrom, Hope Mizzell, and Dan Tufford.

4/2010: Nate Kettle received a Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant (Decision, Risk, and Management Sciences) from the National Science Foundation for his research on the “influence of risk, uncertainty, and scale on coastal adaptation priorities.”

2010: A new multi-model project will assess the potential impacts of climate change on the Congaree National Park. Included will be models of river discharge (Congaree and Wateree Rivers) under various climate change scenarios, effects of discharge on floodplain hydrology and hydraulics, and maps of potential impacts on key habitat indicators. This project is funded by the National Park Service.

Workshops & Meetings

Drought Impacts and Stresses on Coastal Ecosystems Workshop
Georgetown, South Carolina, March 23, 2010.

The workshop was intended for individuals and organizations with experience and/or expertise with "on-the-ground" drought impacts and related coastal management issues, including local resource managers, researchers, conservation groups, and state and federal agencies with environmental management and permitting responsibilities.

Drought Impacts and Stresses on Urban Water Systems
Huntersville, North Carolina, March 18, 2010.

A meeting was conducted with the North Carolina Urban Water Consortium, which consists of water systems from twelve of the state's larger cities. The partnership provided opportunities for research, technology transfer, and discussion of issues experienced by water systems in urban areas.
