Funded and administered by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),
the Affiliated Research Center (ARC)
program transfers geospatial technologies from
universities and NASA to commercial companies, not-for-profit
organizations, trade organizations, and local and tribal governments.
The ARC program history dates back to
1988 with the formation of the Visiting Investigator Program (VIP) at the
John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. In 1992, VIP was
expanded to include a pilot university extension under the direction of
John R. Jensen, known as VIP-X, at University of South Carolina's
Department of Geography.
Building on the success of VIP-X, the program was expanded to include other
universities in 1996 and renamed the Affiliated Research Center (ARC)
program. Since 1992, NASA has
generated nearly 200
VIP-X and ARC
projects that have benefited the U.S. commercial sector.
University of South Carolina has completed 35 of these projects with
partners in the Southeast and other areas of the U.S. Some of these
35
project themes included environmental monitoring, real estate sales,
development studies, LIDAR remote sensing, and urban / suburban hydrologic
modeling.
