NOAA awarded $3,500 to Ebenezer Nyadjro (Ph.D. student in Marine Science) to attend two conferences in Portugal this October (12-22).
Mr. Nyadjro is advised by Associate Professor Subra Bulusu of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences.
The 4th Coastal Altimetry Workshop in Porto, Portugal (October 14-15) ( http://www.coastalaltimetry.org/ ) and the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team meeting in Lisbon, Portugal (October 18-22) (http://www.ostst-hydro-2010.com) will bring a team of experts and students together to deliberate on the use of altimeter data. Support to attend these meetings was aimed at helping early career scientists "spin-up" on the use of altimeter data in coastal regions. Some types of altimeter application make direct use of along-track altimeter SLA or SSH, often in combination with other satellite or in situ data (coastal radars, tide gauge SSH, mooring data, satellite SST, wind or ocean color). Another type of use is found in coastal circulation models that assimilate altimeter (and other) data. Although those engaged in these studies may be using available global data, several groups are providing processing along-track SLA data specifically for coastal regions. The meetings will focus on issues involved in that coastal processing, as well as the retrieval of altimeter data from coastal regions.
