"There is overwhelming agreement amongst scientists that human-induced climate change is altering natural ecosystems, and that these impacts have major economic and societal impacts. The question that we need to ask is no longer, “is climate change happening.” Rather, it is, “where, when, and how severe will these impacts will be so that we can better prepare for the future.” How do we, as a society, prepare for a world in which climate change is happening at ever increasing rates? Interdisciplinary research that includes expertise from an array of disciplines plays a role in helping society to adapt to some of the worst impacts on the horizon by providing insight into where and when the impacts of climate change are most likely to occur, and then working with decision makers to prepare for these changes. Through these efforts, we may be better able to focus efforts, resources and treasure to address the challenge of global climate change. I will discuss recent advances in climate change adaptation and present examples of how local action can translate into global solutions."
