No Impact Carolina Week

The year-long, campus-wide “No Impact Carolina Experiment” continues in November with No Impact Carolina Week, an experiment in ways of living a happier life that will result in a healthier earth. This is not a program to tell people about how they’re destroying the environment. Instead, it’s an opportunity to test whether the modern “conveniences” we take for granted are actually making us happier or perhaps are just eating away at our time and money. This one week “carbon cleanse” is a chance to see what a difference no-impact living can have on our quality of life, improving ourselves and our community while leading to a life that is happier, less costly, and more relaxed.

No Impact Man

No Impact Carolina Week begins on Sunday, November 6th and ends on Saturday, November 12th. Students, faculty, and staff can sign-up by sending an email to ecorepsusc@gmail.com, by providing their email address on sign-up sheets in University 101 classes or on tables around campus, or by visiting the campus EcoReps Facebook site: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=130930943679669.

Once participants sign up, they will receive emails each morning with the day’s theme and tips for completing the challenge. Updates throughout the day will be given via the EcoRep’s twitter (@scecoreps) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/scecoreps). Participants will be invited to special events at 7:00 p.m. in the Green Quad’s Learning Center for Sustainable

Futures, including a kick-off event on Sunday and a mid-week gathering on Wednesday that will feature free food.

Everyone will be encouraged to connect with other participants to help stay motivated. Participants will be able to share their reactions and tips by replying to the Facebook messages and tweets.

Each day all participants will be asked to focus on a new aspect of their lives. On Sunday they will be asked to stop consuming new goods, and then on Monday to stop making trash. Tuesday focuses on transportation, Wednesday on food, Thursday on energy, and Friday on water. Each day builds on the day before, so by Friday participants are not shopping for new goods, not making trash, only traveling by sustainable transportation, eating locally, using less energy, and wasting less water. No Impact Carolina Week culminates on Saturday with “Giving Back,” a day to experiment with some community service.

Sunday, Nov 6th – Consumption: Analyze your shopping/spending habits.

Monday, Nov 7th – Trash: Avoid creating any trash that would be sent to landfills.

Tuesday, Nov 8th – Transportation: Examine your transportation habits and find alternative methods.

Wednesday, Nov 9th – Food: Discover the source of your food and consider the miles it traveled to get here.

Thursday, Nov 10th – Energy: Find obstacles to reducing your electric consumption and figure out ways around them.

Friday, Nov 11th – Water: Experiment with methods that reduce your water consumption.

Saturday, Nov 12th – Giving Back: Find a service project to give back to your community.
