RecycleOlympics

  • WHAT: 2nd Annual Sustainable Carolina RecycleOlympics Games
  • WHEN: Feb. 15, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • WHERE: Davis Field, between the Russell House and Thomas Cooper Library
  • WHO: USC Students, Faculty, and Staff

On your mark, get set, recycle! Sustainable Carolina is kicking off the national 8-week RecycleMania Competition this year with our 2nd Annual RecycleOlympics. During eight weeks each spring, schools nationwide compete in RecycleMania to reduce waste, increase recycling, and raise awareness of conservation issues across campus. While RecycleMania officially starts on Feb. 5 and lasts through Mar. 31, the RecycleOlympics kick-off event will be held at USC’s Davis Field on Feb. 15.

The RecycleOlympics is a one-day event that seeks to educate students on what can and cannot be recycled. By playing games that show students what items are destined for the recycling bin, we hope to maximize campus recycling during the 8-week RecycleMania competition against Clemson University. The RecycleOlympics features games that students can play for prizes, including an obstacle course, shot put with telephone books, bottle toss, newspaper hat making, and recycling sorting.

Winners will receive prizes ranging from gift certificates from The Backpacker, Cool Beans, Tio’s, Yoghut, and many more. Participants will be entered into grand prize drawings with prizes such as a $50 iTunes gift card, an iPod shuffle, iPod speakers, and Rock Band 2. Students who are “caught green-handed” throughout February and March could also win prizes by recycling on campus anytime, anywhere.

Only YOU can help us save natural resources and beat Clemson! Last year the Tigers took home the South Carolina RecycleMania title. This year, let’s return the title back to its rightful owner—the Gamecocks!

RecycleMania is a competition among college and university recycling programs in North America: "Hundreds of schools, thousands of students, millions of pounds of recyclables!" Each week, USC will weigh its recyclables and compost and enter data into the RecycleMania website.  One of our main focuses is to educate the campus on what they can recycle and where to take recyclable materials.
