Solar Nun Inspires at Sustainable Carolina

It's not every day that college students cross paths with a nun. But more than 30 USC students spent Tuesday evening with Sister Paula González, whose environmental evangelism has earned her the moniker “Solar Nun.”

González spoke to students at Sustainable Carolina about the role of solar and other renewable energies in America’s future. “All the jobs everyone is screaming that they don’t have are not the jobs they lost,” she told students. “Their new jobs will be different, if we are smart. Our choice of energy is going to determine our future.”

González, a former biology professor, has outfitted her home in Cincinnati, Ohio with solar energy panels, and cruises around town in her solar-powered golf cart. Students at Sustainable Carolina showed Sister Paula their solar powered golf cart used to collect campus compost.

The 79-year-young environmentalist left students with a pressing thought: “How much will your children’s energy bills cost? You can affect that by becoming advocates for renewable energies with your vote.”
