Hey folks,
My Monday gardening time got rained out. I'm going to try again this Friday with planting out our onion starts. There are scattered showers predicted so we'll tentatively be out there about 10:30 if it's not pouring. We'll also be weeding and mulching among the raspberries, getting the bed ready for its spring explosion of growth. All bets are off this year about those March and April killing frosts. I suspect we won't be getting them, according to how mild this winter has been, but I'm shy to commit to it being early spring. Last time I fell for that I lost all my tomato plants to frost in April. Hope you'll join us on Friday. -Matt [...]

Re: summer garden on it's way
Hey all-
Glad to see that y'all have had a productive spring and are moving on into the summer so strongly. We are a little behind here at The President's House vegetable garden, but are about to be going strong. We have prepped our garden and will lay it out this week. We will be changing the garden from the traditional row and furrow type garden, to a simple geometric parterre in the Italian style. We have rooted upright rosemary over the winter for the clipped hedge and will be laying out our vegetable garden rooms. This is a new type of gardening for me and I look forward to taking on the challenge of making a new type garden that is still just as productive as our old one and looks really neat and more refined. summer garden on it's way
Hey all,
We have harvested lots of lettuce to make way for the summer garden. Come help yourself to a head or some loose leaf lettuce in the Green Quad Learning Center refrigerator. Here's some updates on what's planted in the summer garden so far: We have bush beans in the second row from the sidewalk. These are real providers, producing extra long beans all summer long. The next row from the sidewalk is now partially planted in sweet peppers. The rest of the peppers needed for the row are in flats in the greenhouse. I'll get them down to the garden on Friday, unless anyone wants to get them planted before then. If so, respond to this email and I'll meet you to get them from the greenhouse for you. In the last row from the sidewalk we have the first of our tomatoes and basil planted. We'll need to work on trellising for the tomatoes. I hope to start that this Friday as well. Come out and pick strawberries! They're coming on strong. You might also want to bring a knife in case some artichokes are ready. We harvested the first of them today. Wait until the buds [...]

3/16 Community Garden Volunteers
Good morning garden lovers,
Experiential Learning Team is putting together a service opportunity for a group of girls in Zeta Tau Alpha. Is anyone available this Friday, 3/16, afternoon for a group to volunteer in the community garden? This Friday would be ideal for them as their coordinator would be able to attend but if not, next week would work too!
Thank you,

onions, compost turning, weeds
Hey everyone,
If we don't get rained out, I hope you'll join me tomorrow from 9-11 am at the garden. We'll be planting some onion starts, flipping the compost pile in our cedar bins, and maybe delicately weeding among the cabbage seedlings. I'll bring my friend's Irish storm kettle again, to fix up some quick cups of herbal tea, blended with alfalfa greens from the bioswale in front of the learning center. See you out there if it's not soggy! -Matt

Re: spinach, carrots
Hey Sheila,
Yeah we're spreading compost on top of our previous garden beds, which we're first loosening up with spades or pick axes. You might remember how hard-packed the existing clay subsoil is. We're getting somewhere with softening it through organic matter and earthworm activity. When we started the garden a shovel bounced off the surface of the ground. It was like concrete. Now we can sink in the depth of the shovel where we've been growing and adding compost all these years. Glad your tomatoes are working out. Homegrown are the best. Strawberry seeds....I haven't started them intentionally but they've come up readily in compost, so maybe they're easy. Take care, and keep in touch! -Matt [...]
