A
joint appointment with African American Studies, Germany teaches
courses on recent U.S. history and 20th Century African American
Studies.
His research focuses on the American South, urban history, documentary
history, digital history, and post-World War II U.S. politics, with a
particular emphasis on issues of poverty, civil rights, and citizenship.
He is author of several articles and the forthcoming New Orleans
After the Promises: Poverty, Citizenship, and the Search for the Great
Society (University of Georgia Press, February 2007) and co-editor
of two books about Lyndon Johnson's White House recordings and the 1960s:The
Kennedy Assassination
and the Transfer of Power (Norton, 2005) and Toward the Great
Society (forthcoming from Norton, August 2007). He is a co-founder
and co-editor of www.whitehousetapes.org and
a co host of For The Record, a PBS interview program on politics
and history.
Current
Activities
He is currently conducting research for projects on the Johnson administration
and the southern freedom movement and on Hurricane Katrina.
