Familiarity with the geography of the Middle East and North Africa is crucial to an understanding of the area's history.  Prior to the date of the map quiz, we will       devote some time to the physical and political geography of the Middle East and North Africa.
The mid-term and final examinations will consist of several questions to be        answered with essays of varying length.  You will have some choice in the          selection of questions.  Test material will be drawn from class lectures and other  in-class assignments.
The two papers will be based on your reading and analysis of the novels by Jabra and Lemsine.  They must be typed and adhere to the page limits specified.  The  specific issues to be addressed in these essays will be distributed in class well      before the due dates.  In addition to being graded on their content, essays will also be graded on style (grammar, spelling, syntax).  Work of sub-standard quality will be returned for re-writing.  For your own protection, please retain copies of your essays, either on diskette or as photocopies, until the end of the semester.

CLASS GROUND RULES

  • Examinations are to be taken in examination books (blue books) supplied by the student.  Work submitted on loose pages will be penalized.
  • Should you miss the mid-term examination because of illness, you must, at the next class meeting, present a written medical excuse and arrange with the    instructor to take a make-up exam.  Please do not ask to make up an               examination or to re-schedule either the mid-term or the final for any reason other than illness.  Failure to make up a missed examination will result in a grade of zero for that work.
  • It is assumed that all work submitted for grade is the student's own. Should situations to the contrary arise, they will result in the automatic failure of the course.
  • Work submitted late (which is defined as any time or anywhere other than the class meeting on the due date) will be subject to the assessment of grade      penalties.  Work submitted later on the same day, and until the next class   meeting, will be penalized one-half a letter grade.  Work submitted thereafter will be penalized one letter grade per day (weekends excepted).  No work will be accepted after one week from the due date.
  • The grade "Incomplete" is not a normal grading option in this course and will be assigned only under the most extraordinary circumstances.

As a matter of courtesy -

  • Please arrive promptly for class so as not to distract the instructor or your   classmates once class has begun.  Please do not leave class before its            conclusion.  Should circumstances require you to leave early, please consult with the instructor prior to the class meeting.
  • Please do not engage in conversations with classmates during lectures,          discussions, or films.
  • Please do not use this class as a time for completing assignments for other classes or for reading newspapers.
  • If you feel you cannot stay awake throughout the class, please do not attend.
