Teaches teaches modern European history, with an emphasis on France, and comparative business history.
Professor
Smith teaches the survey of Europe since the seventeenth century,
France since 1815, and business history. His graduate courses include
reading seminars on nineteenth century Europe, modern France, and
economic development. His publications include various articles
on French political and business history and two books, Tariff
Reform in France, 1860-1900: The Politics of Economic Interest (Cornell
University Press, 1980), and The Emergence of Modern Business
Enterprise in France, 1800-1930 (Harvard University Press,
2006). Current
Activities
On leave in 2006-2007 working on the history of the global
economy in the twentieth century and France's place in it.
