Teaches Medieval European history, with a particular interest in the history of religion.
Professor Ames teaches surveys of Medieval Europe and of Western Civilization, as well as more
specialized courses on the history of the Middle Ages. She has published several articles,
including "Does Inquisition Belong to Religious History?", which appeared in The American
Historical Review (February 2005).
Current Activities:
I am currently completing a book on the formation of the religious world of heresy
inquisitions in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. My next project will be a religious
history of wine in the later Middle Ages.
