Welcome to the Home Page for the 2007 NEH Summer Institute for College and University Teachers, “African-American History as Public History: South Carolina as a Case Study.” The institute, held between July 9 and August 3, 2007, was an enormous success for us and for those who participated. We hope that the various links here will help you learn about what we did during our institute, and perhaps illustrate how rich the Public History opportunities are in South Carolina for studying African-American History. From time to time, we will be posting additional materials developed for the institute participants during the institute, or by the participants themselves after the institute was completed.

We will not be offering this institute again in 2008, but the NEH will have another impressive set of offerings of opportunities for college and university teachers, and for secondary teachers, to engage in research seminars and pedagogical institutes. We urge you to visit their web site, http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/seminars.html to discover what those may be for 2008.
