Michelin Lecture by Harlow Unger A Success

On Wednesday, September 19, the Dept of History and Michelin North America co-sponsored a public lecture by noted author Harlow Unger on “Lafayette: How a Young French Man Saved America,” in the Campus Room at Capstone House on the USC campus. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Mary Anne Fitzpatrick welcomed an audience of more than 150 to the event and Lacy Ford, Chair of History, thanked Michael Fanning, Vice President for Corporate Affairs at Michelin North America, for the company’s support in sponsoring the event and introduced Mr. Unger. After a fine lecture, Mr. Unger autographed copies of his book for members of the audience.

A veteran journalist, broadcaster, educator and historian, Harlow Unger has written 15 books, including four biographies of American’s Founding fathers: “Noah Webster: The Life and Times of an American Patriot,” “John Hancock: Merchant King and American Patriot,” “Lafayette” and “The Unexpected George Washington: His Private Life.” A graduate of Yale University, Unger served as a foreign correspondent and American affairs analyst in the overseas news service for “The New York Herald Tribune,” “The Times,” “The Sunday Times” in London and for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation before turning his attention to full-time writing.

The event was part of an on-going effort on the part of the Department of History to cooperate with business leaders in the state to emphasize the importance of a vibrant cultural life in the humanities to South Carolina’s on-going efforts to build a new, knowledge and research-driven economy and a better quality of life in the state. Kudos to Michelin for their generous support of this effort.
