PUBLIC HISTORY ---- Getting a graduate assistantship
By the time incoming Public History students start classes in the fall, we have arranged a graduate
assistantship for most. The key to getting an assistantship is to stay in contact with your faculty advisor
during the summer before you arrive in Columbia. Let the Public History faculty know that you want
an assistantship and keep us current on your e-mail address and telephone number in the summer as you
prepare to move to Columbia. You should also assemble a professional resume for yourself and be
prepared to send it upon request as part of the assistantship application process.

A few teaching assistantships are offered to incoming Public History students by the Department of
History, but most Public History graduate students are supported by professional assistantships in a
public history agency. Recent assistantships have been available to Public History students at Historic
Columbia Foundation, the South Carolina State Museum, the South Carolina Department of Archives
and History, the State Historic Preservation Office, the City of Columbia Historic Preservation Office,
the South Carolina Downtown Development Association, the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology
and Anthropology, and the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.
Assistantships have also been available on the University of South Carolina campus at the McKissick
Museum, the South Caroliniana Library, Thomas Cooper Library, and the Museum of Education, among
others.
