Pavel Ivlev is the executive director of the Institute of Modern Russia, a non-profit organization devoted to the advancement of democratic values and the rule of law in Russia. He will discuss the current legal system in Russia and his role as a former adviser to Yukos, the Russian oil company and its former CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky. This event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored with the Russian and Eurasian Studies Program, the School of Law and the Rule of Law Collaborative.

Dr. Tanya Golash-Boza has a joint appointment in Sociology and American Studies at the University of Kansas. She is the author of three books as well as dozens of peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and essays in online and print magazines addressing issues blackness in Peru, Latino/a identity in the U.S., and the human rights impact of U.S. immigration policies. Her scholarship recently earned the Distinguished Early Career Award of the Racial and Ethnic Minorities Studies Section of the American Sociological Association. Her books will be available for purchase at the University Bookstore at the Russell House and a book signing and reception will be held after the lecture. This event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored with the Latin American Studies Program
Playing to Lose? Russia and the Arab Spring

Carol R. Saivetz is a Research Affiliate at MIT's Security Studies Program and a Research Associate at Harvard's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. She has written widely on Soviet and now Russian foreign policy toward the Middle East and toward the other post-Soviet states. Her lecture will examine Russian interpretations and reactions to the Arab Spring as it unfolded over the last year. She will focus on the Russian policy toward the Libyan conflict and toward the continuing violence in Syria. It will further explain the factors that form Russia’s policies and access both the domestic and international implications of the current policies in place as well as analyze what is at stake for Russia if Assad is removed from power. This event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored with the Russian and Eurasian Studies Program and the Islamic World Studies Program.

The Other Side of Immigration
Film Screening

Based on over 700 interviews with men and women living in the Mexican countryside, The Other Side of Immigration asks why so many Mexicans leave home to work in the United States and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind. A Q and A with filmmaker Roy Germano, who received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Texas in Austin, and a reception, will follow the film screening. This event is free and open to public and is co-sponsored with the Latin American Studies Program.
