African Studies Program

A Welcome from the New Director…

Welcome to African Studies!

The South Carolina African Studies Program is a vibrant and growing center of research, teaching, and community outreach.

With an outstanding faculty and a recognized commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry, the Program is dedicated to fostering a critical understanding and sustained engagement with African politics, history, and culture. We invite you to join our efforts.

For undergraduates, the African Studies Program offers a rich and important minor, an opportunity for study in which students can choose from courses in Anthropology, English, Geography, History, Language and Literature, Political Science, and Religion, as well as offerings in Swahili and Arabic. Many of the courses in the minor offer excellent preparation for students interested in human rights, non-governmental advocacy, development, and transitional justice.

For both advanced undergraduate and graduate students interested in conducting research in Africa, the Program sponsors an annual grant competition. Details of this year’s competition will be announced at the end of the fall semester.

For faculty and students alike, the Program hosts colloquia, visiting scholars, and conferences. In the next weeks, we will be announcing the 2011-12 schedule for Indaba – the program’s new bi-weekly seminar series and reading group. Also on the horizon: course development grants for USC faculty interested in developing classes that offer new and innovative ways of engaging with Africa.

In the next weeks and months, I look forward to meeting and working with you – whether you are new to African Studies or a long time contributor to its work.

If you have questions, suggestions or if you would like to be on our mailing list, please send us an email: uscafricanstudies@gmail.com

With warm greetings,

Erik Doxtader
