The Latin American Studies
Program is a multi-disciplinary, broadly based undergraduate degree program that
offers courses in Latin American history, politics, anthropology, geography, and
literature. Students can select from an array of courses that enable them to
explore Latin America from a variety of perspectives, although they also will
have an opportunity to focus their studies on a particular field or theme. LASP
majors are encouraged to undertake a study abroad program, either the USC summer
program in Mexico or a semester-long program offered through another academic
institution. LASP majors are eligible for some modest financial support for such
educational endeavors in Latin America.
The major in Latin American Studies affords an excellent background for
graduate or professional school or for careers in the business or non-profit
sector. A handy overview of careers for Latin American Studies majors (After
Latin American Studies: A Guide to Graduate Study and Employment for Latin
Americanists) can be located at the USC Career Center. As a minor or cognate,
Latin American Studies richly complements majors in many other fields, including
Anthropology, Business, Geography, GINT, History, Journalism, and Spanish.
In keeping with its mission of fostering campus and community awareness of
issues related to Latin America, the program sponsors public lectures,
workshops, and symposia, and supports faculty and student research on topics
related to Latin America and Latino/a communities in South Carolina.
We invite students with an interest in Latin America to talk to the program
director, Dr. Ramona Lagos, or any of the program's faculty.
