History of the Archives

The South Carolina Broadcasters Association established the Broadcasting Communications Archives in 1976 as a repository of records, documents and tapes to chronicle the history and development of the industry in this state.  The archives have been established as a unit of the University of South Carolina's Museums and Archives program located in the McKissick building on the Horseshoe of the Columbia campus.

Purpose

In addition to housing documents of the Broadcasters Hall of Fame and providing appropriate recognition for those individuals selected for this honor, the Broadcasting Communication Archives, through development of its program, serves the following purposes:
  • Serve as repository for the state's broadcasting industry to preserve the record of its people and its development      and to conduct an active collection program.
  • Provide visibility for the Association and promote public awareness of the contributions of broadcasting and broadcasters in South Carolina.
  • Collect and preserve items of historical and continuing interest such as program recordings, oral histories, information about notable individuals in the industry in South Carolina.
