This
picture promoted the Wally Mullinax show, heard on WESC "660 in Dixie"
from 1963 to 1975. Mullinax played requests for country music, talked
with listeners about what was on their mind (mostly politics), gave away
green stamps, cash, etc., and informed listeners where law enforcement
had radar units. The program was heard from 6am to 9am during most
of the above years. Mullinax's popularity was confirmed when he ran
for the first Greenville County council and led the ticket getting more
votes in Greenville county than Richard Nixon. A 1949 Graduate of
Furman University with special radio studies at NorthWestern University,
Wally Mullinax was uniquely qualified to host radio talk in the 60's.
He brought to the WESC audience a sincerity, knowledge of people and wit
that helped the community bridge the gap between social and political issues.
Wally Mullinax is a past president of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association
and a member of its hall of fame. He founded WMTY FM in Greenwood,
SC, and Co-founded WMTY AM.
