CALL FOR PAPERS

This is a call for papers for the 2004 South Carolina Society for Philosophy (SCSP) meeting, to be hosted by the North Carolina State University Department of Philosophy and Religion. This will be a joint meeting with the North Carolina Philosophy Society.

Papers on any philosophical topic (ethics, politics, religion, science, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, language, etc.) are welcome. Papers should be designed for a presentation time of twenty minutes (about ten pages.) There may be some special sessions with invited speakers, but the bulk of the sessions will be based on submitted papers. Papers will be reviewed by the program chair and two other referees.

Submission Guidelines

Papers should be no more than 10 double-spaced pages in length (3000 words), prepared with one inch margins, and typed in a standard font. Authors should be prepared to present their papers in time-slots of approximately 20 minutes (with a further 10 minutes allotted for questions after the paper presentation). A cover page should be attached to submissions, with the following information: title, an abstract of 150–300 words, author name(s), affiliation, complete mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. Graduates and undergraduates who want their papers to be considered for an award (see below) should say so explicitly on their cover page. Copies of the paper (hard copy or by e-mail) should be sent to the Program Chair, to arrive no later than January 2, 2004:

Papers will be reviewed by the program chair and two other referees. Authors will be notified of acceptances no later than January 25, 2004. For notification purposes, be sure to provide your e-mail address in addition to your return surface-mail address.

Graduate & Undergraduate Essay Prizes

Prizes ($50) will be awarded for the best papers authored by a graduate student and an undergraduate student (restricted to South Carolina students). These winning papers will be included on the program for the annual meeting. Other student papers, in addition to the prize-winners, may also be included on the program. Submissions from students are very strongly encouraged. Those who teach promising students are asked please to encourage submissions from these students. Papers submitted for consideration for an award will be judged by two referees who are not from the student's institution.

Panels and Workshops

In addition to submitted papers, we invite proposals for special sessions, with invited speakers, on topics that may be of interest to SCSP members and/or on topics that are especially current. It would also be good to continue the tradition of having a round-table discussion on a topic of professional interest to members. (In the past we have had round-table discussions devoted to various teaching-related matters, and to the issue of philosophy in the public forum). We would very much appreciate suggestions from SCSP members. Proposals for special sessions and workshops should be sent to the Program Chair by December 15. Proposals should specify issues to be discussed, format (including time to be allotted: 20, 40, or 60 minutes), names of presenters, and should include abstracts of presentations. These proposals may involve speakers from South Carolina, or colleagues from outside of South Carolina who would be willing to attend the meetings at their own expense. Unfortunately, the SCSP does not have funds to cover speaker expenses.

Conference Location and Registration

Information on registration and other such details will be posted here as that information becomes available.

The hotel for the conference is the Holiday Inn-Brownstone Hotel at 1707 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27605. 60 rooms have been reserved for Friday Feb 6, and 30 for Saturday Feb 7, at $69 per night. [Map showing the location of the Hotel]

To get the special rate mention the name of the group: NCPS/SCSP@NCSU. Reservations can be made by phone at (919) 828-0811 or, toll free, at (800)HOLIDAY. The hotel is just a few blocks down Hillsborough Street from the conference site.

The conference site is Caldwell Hall at NC State, shown on a map at the following link: [http://www.ncsu.edu/campus_map/north.htm]. Caldwell is building 25 on the map. It is the middle of three attached buildings: Tomkins (building 22 on the map), Caldwell, and Winston (building 23).

Tomkins and Winston have entrances onto Hillsborough, but not Caldwell. (If you enter Tomkins, turn right at the first floor hall and continue until you walk through the double doors. You will be in Caldwell. The lounge is on your left, and stairs will bring you down one flight to the main meeting rooms. If you enter Winston, turn left at the hall and proceed through the double doors. You will be in Caldwell, and the lounge is on your right.) From the back of the buildings, you can enter Caldwell directly at the lounge.

Plenty of parking should be available Saturday in the North Hall lot right across Hillsborough from Tomkins, Caldwell, and Winston. You are also allowed to park there after 5 on Friday, though it can be crowded. Visitor parking is available any time Friday in the Riddick Lot which can be seen at the far right of the campus map. From Hillsborough enter at Pullen Dr. or Enterprise St. and proceed to the traffic circle where a right turn will take you onto Stinson Dr. and the visitor kiosk. They'll show you how to find the lot, and you can easily walk to the back side of Caldwell, where you can enter. (You can click on either Winston, Tomkins, or Caldwell Halls on the campus map, and it will show you pictures and give you other information. The Brownstone Hotel would be just one block east of Pullen Drive on the campus map.)
