It is generally agreed that it is the notion of 'pros hen' (usually translated as 'focal meaning') that makes it possible for Aristotle to develop a general metaphysics, as a science of being qua being. After illustrating why the constitution of such a science is a problem for Aristotle, i.e., why he needs 'pros hen', I will argue, from a close reading of Metaphysics IV, 1/2, for an interpretation of 'pros hen' that differs significantly from the one that is currently dominant. Finally, I will sketch some global implications of my interpretation for an understanding of Aristotle's metaphysics: of its goals, its subject, its methods, and its role in relation to the special sciences.
