"Biobanking" is the collection of a large number of individuals'
biospecimens, extracted DNA, or derived genetic information, usually with
some information about those individuals, in a centralized facility. The
associated information may include demographic information and medical
records. A biobank might be used for research or public health purposes.
This paper is a discussion of important ethical questions regarding
informed consent, confidentiality, privacy, genetic self-knowledge, and
other ethical issues that arise in the practice of biobanking.
Rosemarie Tong is Distinguished Professor of Health Care Ethics and Director
of the Center for Applied and Professional Ethics at UNC-Charlotte.
