LODGING

The 2007 SAAP Conference (March 8–10, 2007) will be held at the Marriott Columbia (1200 Hampton Street / Columbia, SC 29201 USA). Contracted rates for sleeping rooms are $119 for single or double and $129 for triple or quad reservations. (Alternatives listed below.) These rates will also be honored for rooms occupied two days before and two days after the conference dates based upon availability.

The deadline for room reservations that qualify for these lower group rates is February 15, 2007. Reservations requested after that date will be accepted based upon availability.

There are two ways to reserve rooms: via the internet or by telephone (though you must use the latter method if your check-in date is before March 8 or if your check-out date is after March 11).

Internet: If you want to reserve rooms during the dates of the conference (check-in on or after March 8 and check-out on or before March 11), you can use the link to the left. Enter your arrival date to begin the reservation process. To qualify for lower group rates, our "group code" (SAPSAPB) should already be entered automatically into the apporopriate field. If the code is not there, enter it before you hit the "Find" button.

Telephone: If you prefer to make room reservations by telephone or if you want to reserve rooms outside of the dates of the conference, you will need to call 1-800-228-9290 to make your reservations. To qualify for the lower group rates, you should state that you will be attending the SAAP Conference in Columbia, SC (group code: SAPSAPB).

Check-in time is 4pm. Check-out time is 11am. If you want to extend your check-out time, the following charges will apply: $25 per room 11:01am–2pm; $45.00 per room 2:01pm–4pm; $65.00 per room 4:01pm–6pm. After 6pm, a full day charge will apply. All late check-outs must be approved by the front desk. Early check-in will be accommodated based upon availability.

Parking is available at the city-owned lot connected to the hotel at a cost of $1/hour or $10/day. Bus parking is available at a cost of $35/day per bus. Limited Valet parking is also available at $16 overnight or hourly: $4 for the first hour and $2 for each additional hour.

LODGING ALTERNATIVES

If rooms are not available at the Marriott, a list of other nearby hotels can be accessed at the following link:
http://hotel-guides.us/colleges/south-carolina/usc-columbia.html.
Just plug in your check-in and check-out dates. Be sure to read the hotel reviews.

Below is a partial list of what you should find at the above link. Hampton Inn is listed but probably already sold out. In that case, the Inn at USC is the nicest nearby option but more expensive as well. The Rodeway Inn on Main Street is the closest, most convenient option and quite cheap (for good reason). (For gauging distances on the map, the conference location is at the corner of Main and Hampton.)

  • Nice, fairly close, but more expensive:
        Hampton Inn / 822 Gervis Street, Columbia, SC / (803) 231-2000
        Inn at USC / 1619 Pendleton Street, Columbia, SC / (803) 779-7779
  • Quaint, but not close, and not inexpensive:
        Claussen's Inn / 2003 Greene St, Columbia, SC / (803) 765-0440
  • Not so nice, not so close, but less expensive:
Clarion Town House Hotel / 1615 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC / (803) 771-8711
Holiday Inn City Centre At USC / 630 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC / (803) 799-7800
        Comfort Suites Downtown / 501 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC / (803) 744-4000
  • Very close, cheap, and you get what you pay for:
        Rodeway Inn / 1301 Main Street, Columbia, SC / (803) 779-7790

TRANSPORTATION

Several airlines fly directly into Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE). The Marriott is about 9 miles northeast of the Columbia airport. Maps and detailed transportation information (including driving directions) are available on the Marriott's Maps & Transportation web page.

To get to the hotel from the Columbia airport (and back), the Marriott's complimentary airport shuttle service is available on request. Call the hotel (1-803-771-7000) when you arrive at the Columbia airport. Alternatively, estimated taxi fare is $20 (one way).

You may also fly into Charlotte (CLT) and from there drive about 90 miles south to Columbia. The Greenville-Spartanburg airport (GSP) is 110 miles to the northwest of Columbia. The Atlanta airport (ATL) is 215 miles to the east of Columbia.

All conference events will be held at the Marriott Columbia. The hotel is located in the middle of downtown Columbia at the corner of Main and Hampton. Both The Vista (six blocks away) and Five Points (around fifteen blocks away) are also within walking distance from the hotel.
