What should be the priorities for 21st Century Biology and how do we
achieve the focus we wish? On the global scene, the most serious health
problems today are in the third world: AIDS, malnutrition, tuberculosis,
malaria and measles are among the most prominent. Yet, most of the
world's scientific expertise is in the industrialized countries. Not
surprisingly, priorities in research and innovation reflect, in major
part, the concerns of the citizens of the countries concerned and of the
interests of and available funding for investigators. Should this be a
problem to be seriously concerned about? If not, why not? If so, how
might the issues be addressed?
