We will make a brief review of some theories of definition in physics and
mathematics, with special emphasis on applications and open problems. From
the formal point of view, we show, for example, that there are many
superfluous concepts in most of the standard physical and mathematical
theories. We intend to make a critical analysis about this and suggest some
ideas for future research.
