Synopsis of a Lecture:
On September 5th, 1996, Pam Mack opened the second year of
meetings of the Science Studies Group with a public lecture on the
history of engineering at NASA. Expanding on themes from her book
Viewing the Earth: The Social Construction of the Landsat Satellite
System (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1990) she told of the changes in the
political, corporate, and engineering culture that accompanied the
shift to big technology.
Since Pam has been serving for many years as an executive officer of
the History of Science Society, her visit was also a welcome
opportunity to discuss prospects for History of Science in the
undergraduate curriculum of the University of South Carolina.
